Common Scam Tactics to Watch For
- The "Emergency" Scam: They build trust over weeks or months. Suddenly, there is a crisis—a medical emergency, a car accident, or they are stranded at an airport—and they urgently need you to send money via EcoCash, Mukuru, or wire transfer.
- The "Investment" Scam (Pig Butchering): They do not ask for money directly. Instead, they boast about their success in cryptocurrency or foreign exchange trading and offer to "teach you." They direct you to a fake trading platform where you deposit funds you will never get back.
- The Overseas Professional: They claim to be a Zimbabwean working on an oil rig, in the military, or as a doctor overseas. This is a convenient excuse for why they can never meet in person or do video calls, and eventually, they will need money for "customs fees" or a "flight home."
The Golden Rule: Never Send Money
Never send money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency to someone you have never met in person. It does not matter how heartbreaking their story is or how deeply you feel connected to them. If they ask for money, it is almost certainly a scam.
How to Protect Yourself
- Verify their identity: Suggest a video call early on. If they consistently make excuses (broken camera, bad internet), be highly suspicious.
- Do a reverse image search: Save their profile photo and use Google Reverse Image Search or TinEye to see if the picture belongs to someone else on the internet.
- Keep communication on the app: Scammers will often try to move you to WhatsApp or email very quickly so they can avoid the dating app's security filters. Stay on Zimdating until you are confident they are real.
- Trust your instincts: If something feels off, too good to be true, or they are pushing for a level of commitment that makes you uncomfortable, trust your gut.
